Star Trek Beyond shows more Dubai skyline - video

A second, longer trailer of Star Trek Beyond is out and the skyline of Dubai proudly plays a part in the almost three-minute clip.

The instantly-recognisable architecture of DIFC, Downtown Dubai and JLT pose in the backdrop as a heavily-masked Idris Elba attempts to distract us in this third film of the reboot of the franchise.

Insiders exclusively tell us that the DIFC scene was shot near Burj Daman (opposite Ritz-Carlton DIFC), but is not an exact replication of the view.

Elsewhere, an overhead panning shot loops over Burj Khalifa, while the iconic Burj Al Arab gets the same treatment. Neither of the legendary buildings, appear in their truest form and have been heavily doctored. That said, we still feel a tinge of pride seeing them on the big screen.

The first trailer was released in December, and was played out to the soundtrack of Sabotage by Beastie Boys. Again, the UAE featured barely at all, but its brief appearance did give an idea of the role it will play throughout.

The movie, which won’t be released for another eight months, is the third in the most recent reboot of the franchise, and stars Chris Pine, Zach Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Elba and Karl Urban.

Speaking at a press conference inside Burj Al Arab while shooting was on-going, producer Jeffrey Chernov, who was part of the Mission Impossible production in the emirate back in 2010 said: “We came searching for the future and we found it in Dubai. It represents the future of what the next frontier would be like in our film.”

At the same press conference, Chris Pine revealed: “This is such a stunning city. I woke up this morning, opened up the blinds and looked out. It looks like whatever tomorrow will be. It’s future land.”

Zach Quinto, who plays Mr. Spock, also opened up about the recent passing of Leonard Nimoy, who famously originally portrayed the character. “We were incredibly close – in many ways he was like a father to me as our relationship evolved over the past eight years. I feel the significance of the responsibility in a way, Leonard had such a profound and positive impact on millions of people around the world, because of his role. What he and Gene Roddenberry created was so unique. For me, there is another level to this film, which is to truly honour my dear friend and carry on the legacy that he worked so hard to create.”
